Clinical case-stidies: Fibre Reinforced Composite Post in a dog’s Canine. Dr J Van Rensburg

Restoring a canine of a dog patient. I find this amazing. If the Gradia Direct composite can last in a dog's mouth, then it should last in a human mouth as well.

Patient

Male, 8 year old

Case history

On examination a broken lower right canine was found on this 8 year old Border collie. The broken section of the tooth was investigated, using a dental probe. An exposure was found and the dog reacted when the probe was pushed into the exposure. A root canal therapy was suggested to the owner of the dog as this exposed pulp could easily develop into an abscess if not root canal treated and sealed off. The necessary appointment was arranged for the tooth to be restored under general anesthetic.

Treatment

The dog was given a general anesthetic. The fractured tooth was examined again and the exposure of the pulp confirmed. The pulp did not bleed which was an indication that the tooth was non-vital, and has been for quite some time. There was a possibility that this situation could have developed into an abscess so therefore a root canal treatment was performed on the tooth. The length of the canal was determined with a lateral scull X-ray. The reaming length was 32 mm and the crown down method was used to ream the canal. The canal was obturated and sealed with Endorez root canal cement and GP points. The tooth was also reinforced by constructing an anatomical fibre post, which was bonded into the tooth with dual cure resin cement (Nexus 2 from Kerr). The tooth was then restored to normal form, slightly shorter than the opposite, lower left canine. The whole procedure was successfully completed, and in approximately one and a half hours the fractured canine was restored to its normal form and function. The dog recovered normally and seemed quite content when we left the operating theatre. An amoxicillin injection was given to prevent any unwanted bacterial infections after the root canal treatment.
